Ostriches are very good parents and will not hesitate to attack anything that they perceive to be a threat to their eggs and chicks.
Ostriches do not have teeth and when they peck at you it is like being pinched – not very sore. Ostriches like shiny objects and will try to peck at your earrings for example and try to swallow it. You do not have to be as concerned about their bite as you should be about their kick.
Ostriches will attack and defend themselves by means of a vicious kick. The kick is very dangerous since they have long and strong toenails on their front feet that can grow up to 7 Centimeters.
Ostriches can’t kick backwards like a horse or a donkey – they kick forward and down which means they can use the long toenail to rip into your skin and tear it open – I call it a Bruce Lee kick; if an ostrich kicks you it can cause severe injury.
Ostriches are not malicious animals though and will only attack if they feel that you are threatening their chicks or eggs. Remember to not try and run since they will out run you even if you are Usain Bolt; best to fall flat on the ground since they do not have a target then because the kicking motion is from top to bottom.
During your guided tour of Safari Ostrich Farm we will take you on a tractor safari into a huge breeding camp with adult breeding ostriches and their nests of eggs and chicks. This is a fantastic way to get close to these big breeding ostriches without having to worry that they will kick you since you are safe on the trailer.
