Our show birds are getting ready for breeding season.
It is that time of year at Safari Ostrich Show Farm for our ostriches to start producing eggs. Our breeding season starts in July and runs until February next year.
It is quite an experience to see the males parading around with their red legs and beaks performing their courtship dances to impress the females. Usually females can produce as many eggs as they can (about 10-16 eggs) cover their bodies with. On commercial farms the eggs produced are taken away to be hatched out in incubators.
After an incubation period of 42 days the chicks start to hatch and this process can take between 8 to 12 hours. It must be said that the chicks are very fragile, especially during the first 12 weeks of their lives and must be looked after very well.
We are waiting in anticipation for our first chicks to arrive.
