The Ostrich is the largest flightless bird in the world and also the largest of all birds.
Adult ostriches weigh about 140kg when fully grown. Scientists have worked out for a bird of this size to get air-born they will need a wingspan of at least 6 meters! Imagine that – this huge bird come flying over your head with a 6 meter wingspan – it is maybe a good thing that they can’t fly.
The primary reason why an ostrich can’t fly actually has to do with their feathers as such. The individual barbules are not inter-locked like a flying bird’s feather. This means the feathers offer no wind resistance for them to get of the ground. These are the two main reasons why ostriches can’t fly.
