Ostriches can run at speeds of up to 80 kilometres an hour and can maintain that speed for up to 2 kilometres on a flat surface.
You can call them the long distance runners of the animal kingdom. The fact that they are so fast also means they are the fastest two-legged animals in the world. Usain Bolt, who in my opinion is a genius in his sphere, is therefore much slower than an adult ostrich.
The only predator that can out-run them is the Cheetah (who can run at speeds up to 120 kilometres an hour) but the Cheetah will never attack an ostrich because although they have the speed to catch them they do not have strength to bring such a big animal as an adult ostrich down to the ground and the big cats that have the strength like lions and leopards do not have the speed to catch up to them. Adult ostriches weigh 120Kg and more. Cheetah will generally go for small prey like springboks. I have seen loins catch and kill an ostrich before but that was because they ambushed the ostrich and hence worked in a “team” to get the ostrich.
